What is a Prediction Market?

A web3 prediction market is essentially a digital survey or poll, but with a catch: to cast your vote, you must pay in crypto*.

Technically, these are marketplaces that utilize blockchain smart contracts to allow participants to buy and sell “shares” based on the outcome of future events.

• Example: A market might ask, “Will it snow in the Philippines?”
• The Mechanism: Users buy “YES” or “NO” shares using stablecoins like USDT or USDC.
• The Payout: If you are right, you profit. If you are wrong, you lose your stake.

Some platforms use dynamic pricing, where the price of a contract reflects the probability of that outcome happening (e.g., a “YES” share costing $0.80 implies an 80% chance of occurring).

But Why Does It Matter?

Because money is on the line, respondents are significantly more serious about their answers.

Unlike a free survey where someone might click random buttons, a prediction market requires a financial commitment. This makes the aggregated data highly reliable.

In fact, major news outlets like Business Insider now cite data from prediction markets during election cycles and major global events because they often produce more accurate forecasts than traditional polling methods.

Are Prediction Markets Similar to Futures Trading?

Technically, yes.*

• In Futures Trading: You buy a Long or Short contract based on where you think the price of a token will go.
• In Prediction Markets: Your “Long” and “Short” positions are replaced by “YES” or “NO.” Instead of betting on price action, you are betting on real-world events—sports results, election outcomes, or political shifts.

*Note that the above explanation is an oversimplication of the mechanism for the sake of clarity. Both markets are about trading “contracts” based on a future outcome.
