Layer-1 blockchain Sui is back online and “fully operational” after suffering a network outage that lasted nearly six hours on Wednesday, January 14. The incident marks the second major downtime for the high-speed network since its mainnet launch in May 2023.
Key Details
The Sui Foundation confirmed the disruption at 3:24 PM UTC, stating that the network was experiencing a “network stall” and that core developers were investigating a solution. While the specific technical trigger has not been fully disclosed, the Foundation described the event as a “Consensus outage”.
- During the downtime, no new blocks were produced, effectively halting transactions and freezing approximately $1 billion in on-chain assets for the duration of the stall.
- The network was restored at 8:44 PM UTC, totaling approximately 5 hours and 52 minutes of downtime.
- The Foundation assured users that transactions are now flowing normally and stated that a full incident report would be released in the coming days.
Market Impact
Despite the service interruption, the price of the native token (SUI) remained relatively stable:
- Data from CoinGecko showed the token trading around $1.85 following the recovery, showing minimal volatility immediately after the news broke.
- This contrasts with typical market reactions to network outages, where native assets often see sharper declines.
Previous Downtime
This event follows a similar disruption in November 2024, where validators fell into a “crash loop” that prevented transaction processing. At that time, the issue was attributed to a bug in the consensus mechanism’s scheduling logic.
Local Adoption and Training Initiatives
The stability of the Sui network is of increasing relevance to the Philippine web3 sector, given recent government and private sector initiatives focused on the blockchain’s technology:
- In December 2025, BitPinas reported that 50 students in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, graduated from “MFW City,” a talent development program organized by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and Yield Guild Games (YGG).
- The scholars were specifically trained in Move, the native programming language of the Sui blockchain.
- The initiative was part of a broader push to equip “Metaverse Filipino Workers” with technical skills for the global digital economy, with students presenting capstone projects designed and launched on the Sui network.
Furthermore, Sui (via developer Mysten Labs) was a primary sponsor of the “Skill District” at the YGG Play Summit in Manila last November, where they conducted workshops for student developers.
